From the New Bern Sun Journal:

The third annual Leukemia Cup Regatta at River Dunes again raised big dollars for medical research.

The 40 sailboats that took part in the weekend event from the River Dunes Marina raised more than $125,000, raising the three-year total for the event to more than $325,000. The local race has been among the national leaders in research fundraising for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of North Carolina.

The money provides research for a cure for blood cancers and treatment and support services for patients and families.

Sailing vessels of all sizes participated in two races at the mouth of the Neuse River on Saturday and one on Sunday. The boats raced in six divisions, with the Oriental Dinghy Club serving as the official race committee. The awards ceremony was held at the River Dunes Harbor Club on Sunday afternoon.

“Once again, we are honored to host the Leukemia Cup Regatta at River Dunes,” said Ed Mitchell of River Dunes. “This is an opportunity for the entire Oriental community to support the great work of the LLS.”

River Dunes is based upon the tradition of the coastal maritime village. This vision evokes far more than a mere subdivision of property, it becomes the quest for a great community that fosters a sense of neighborhood and provides a place where generations can thrive and create memories together – a community that realizes the rewards of living at the water’s edge and respects its demands for care in return.  Click here for more information on River Dunes.
